The downsides for hobbyists are platform and cost. Desktop SOLIDWORKS runs only on Windows. Autodesk Fusion for 3D Printing

Fusion is the favorite of many 3D printing hobbyists because it combines parametric modeling, freeform T-spline sculpting, rendering, and CAM in one program that runs on both Windows and Mac. The Form workspace makes it easier to model organic shapes, such as ergonomic handles or figurines, than in most traditional CAD tools. Fusion can also send models straight to popular slicers.

The free Fusion for Personal Use license is generous but has limits: it’s for non-commercial use by qualifying individuals, it caps the number of active editable documents, and some advanced features such as generative design and advanced simulation require a paid subscription. Onshape for 3D Printing

The free plan’s big trade-off is privacy: documents on the free plan are public, so anyone can find and copy them, and commercial use isn’t allowed. Tips for Designing 3D Printable Parts in Any CAD Program

  • Export in millimeters. Most slicers assume millimeters, so a part exported in inches can come in 25.4 times too small.
  • Use 3MF when you can. It carries units and more model information than STL.
  • Design for your process. Keep overhangs under about 45 degrees for FDM printing, add chamfers instead of fillets on bottom edges, and add clearance (often 0.2 to 0.4 mm) between parts that need to fit together.
  • Control your export resolution. Too coarse and curves look faceted. Too fine and files get huge without any visible improvement.
  • Print a test piece. For snap fits and threaded holes, print a small test coupon before committing to a long print.
